Understanding the UK Graduate Visa

The UK Graduate Visa, also known as the Post-Study Work Visa, allows international students who have completed their degree at a UK university to live and work in the UK without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship. It is one of the most flexible post-study immigration routes available to international graduates.

Important Update (October 2025): The UK government has confirmed that from 1 January 2027, the Graduate Visa duration for bachelor’s and master’s degree holders will be reduced from 2 years to 18 months. PhD and doctoral graduates will continue to receive 3 years. If you apply before 31 December 2026, you will still receive the full 2-year permission. Plan your application timeline carefully.

Who is Eligible for the UK Graduate Visa?

To qualify for the Graduate Visa, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • You must be physically present in the UK at the time of application
  • You must currently hold, or have most recently held, a valid UK Student visa (or Tier 4 visa)
  • You must have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD at a UK Higher Education Provider that holds a valid Student sponsor licence
  • Your university must have confirmed your course completion to the Home Office
  • You must have studied in the UK for at least 12 months (or the full duration of the course if it is shorter)
  • You must have no criminal record or breach of UK immigration rules

Note on Dependants: As of 2024, Graduate Visa holders cannot bring dependant partners or children, unless you are applying as a PhD graduate. This applies to new applications only.

How Much Does the Graduate Visa Cost? (2025)

The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you access to the NHS during your stay. It must be paid upfront with your visa application.

The Application Process

  1. Check your eligibility — Confirm your university has reported your course completion to the Home Office via the Sponsorship Management System
  2. Apply online — Submit your application through the official UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. You must apply from within the UK
  3. Pay fees — Pay the £822 application fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge at the time of application
  4. Provide biometrics — Use the UK Immigration: ID Check app on your smartphone, or attend a biometric appointment if required
  5. Wait for a decision — Processing typically takes up to 8 weeks, though many applications are decided faster
  6. Receive your permission — If approved, your Graduate Visa permission will be granted digitally (there is no physical vignette sticker for in-country applications)

You cannot apply for the Graduate Visa if you are outside the UK. If you are abroad on valid Student permission, you must return to the UK before it expires to apply.

What Can You Do on a Graduate Visa?

The Graduate Visa is one of the most flexible UK work routes available:

  • Work at any skill level in any sector — there is no minimum salary requirement
  • Work for multiple employers simultaneously
  • Take on self-employed or freelance work
  • Job hunt without needing sponsorship
  • Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa if you secure a qualifying job offer
  • Travel in and out of the UK freely

You cannot extend the Graduate Visa — it is a one-time route. After it expires, you must switch to another visa category (such as Skilled Worker or High Potential Individual) or leave the UK.

Transitioning from Graduate Visa to Skilled Worker Visa

Many graduates use their Graduate Visa period to secure full-time employment and then switch to a Skilled Worker Visa. Key points to note:

  • Your employer must be a licensed sponsor
  • From 8 January 2026, Skilled Worker applicants must meet a B2 English language standard (higher than the previous B1 requirement)
  • The minimum salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas is now £38,700, rising to £41,700 from 22 July 2025
  • Jobs must be at RQF Level 6 or above (degree-level equivalent) under updated 2025 rules
